On September 8th, 1565, Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez came ashore at Matanzas Bay, at the current site of the Mission of Nombre de Dios.
At the time of the city's founding, Ponce de Leon and other Europeans had been exploring Florida since the early 1500s. The Timucuan Indians were among the many Native American inhabitants of northern Florida, whose wild beauty and legendary treasures like the Fountain of Youth made many nations desire to claim the region as their own. |
