In the eighteenth century, war between the English and Spanish led to St. Augustine being handed over to the English, only to see the Spanish reclaim the city after the American Revolution.

During the early nineteenth century, the city was held by the Spanish and the French. The land of Florida was bought by America from the French in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.

In 1845, Florida became a state in the United States of America, but would only remain so until December of 1860, when she joined other Southern states to form the Confederate States of America and entered the ensuing American Civil War.

The Fort came back into Union hands on March 11, 1862 after the USS Wabash, a Union gunboat, took the city without firing a shot when it found that Confederate forces had evacuated the area and the local authorities were willing to surrender to preserve the town.
